So the release of 1.2 brings a new mechanism for zone control: Domination. This is a welcome change from the old system which required a minimum population to be present in order get VPs from kills and scenarios.
Basic Breakdown: Controlling Battlefield objectives (BFO) and Keeps for X amount of time = Zone Capture Guaranteed.
That X in the breakdown refers to the timers, there are 2 types of timers:
1- BFOs: capture and hold a particular BFO for 30 minutes. this will grant 1 zone domination point. do this for each of the BFOs and you get 4 domination points. If the enemy puts the BFO into a contested state you lose the domination point.
2- Keeps: capture and hold a keep for 2 hours. This will grant 1 domination point. Do this for both of the keeps and you get 2 domination points. If the enemy captures the keep you lose the domination point.
As soon as you get 6 domination points, the zone flips! Now this method is going to be achievable mainly by multiple warbands working together since if you dont have enough people to guard or at least have scouts at each of the BFOs you will lose the domination points from them. It really does encourage total domination of the zone and not just late night 6 (wo)man groups taking everything.
So you could go around and capture things one at a time, going from BFOs to keeps, but doing it that way means that after you capture the last keep you have to hold everything for 2 hours at that point, which gives the opposing realm plenty of time to get to the zone and fight you. You might want to use the most time efficient method possible.
The optimal method:: This is NOT meant to maximize renown gained from BFO’s and keeps, this is meant to capture the zone as FAST AS POSSIBLE. Take both of the keeps as close to simultaneously as possible. Guard them well, camp the opposing realms warcamp, or queue scenarios, but DO NOT LOSE THE KEEPS. Now that keep doors reset if they aren’t broken down after 20 minutes (20 min not in combat) it is very possible to successfully chain defend keeps. Once you’re at an hour and 15 minutes of holding the keeps, go out and take all the BFO’s, try to capture them as close to simultaneously as possible as well. Now if you successfully hold everything, the BFO’s will finish their zone domination counter at approximately the same time as the keeps. Start to finish it will only take 2 hours to flip the zone with successful defense.
Tips::
1- Keep your warbands mobile. They need to be in place to respond to any threats to the BFOs or keeps. In some zones this means they can sit in the keeps since keeps are pretty centrally located, in other zones they will need to be out in the oRvR area since they will not be able to get to certain BFO’s fast enough to respond to threats.
2- You will need at LEAST 2 to 3 people at each BFO and one person at each keep to act as scouts. Ideally you will have an engineer or magus who is specc’ed into the ground AoE effect (Napalm or Dissolving Mist) since even if they die, as long as they AoE’d the flag it gives your warband 30 additional seconds to get there and prevent the enemy from capping.
3- Ventrilo
4- Did I mention scouts? The enemy realm can go through a PvE route to get to the BFOs OR they can fly to a nearby zone and run across the border to ninja BFOs. Scouts are CRUCIAL.
Tips to DEFEND against Domination:
Well #4 up top is a dead give away for this. Send your groups the PvE route, and send at least 10-12 people so they can overwhelm guards and the opposing realm’s scouts quickly. You can also send people to an adjacent zone and have them walk across the border.
You’ll want to focus on taking BFO’s to scam the zone dominators since its impossible to ninja a keep (they light up on the map remember).
Try to attack BFOs at opposite ends of the zone if possible, i.e. in Dragonwake there are extreme east and west BFOs. An unorganized force or even a small force wont be able to defend both at once if they are zerging around. Attack BFO’s quickly, covertly, and with a smart plan and you can stifle a zone domination that doesn’t have enough people.
I’m welcome to suggestions in this thread for more ideas on defense!
