Public Ventrilo Server Launched – Test Run

Posted by Admin

May 19, 2009

As part of an initiative to be more involved and visible in the gaming community as well as drive more gamers to the site, we are beginning the launch of various public servers of all types. This is a test to see how popular this feature would be. If the demand grows large enough we will begin hosting these full-time. These will range from VoIP chat servers like Ventrilo to game specific servers like Left 4 Dead, Far Cry 2, and Call of Duty 4. This is still in it’s infancy and will continue to grow based on what our readers/listeners want to see us provide.

For testing purposes we have launched a public Ventrilo server so Lagwar.com visitors can have a place to chat with their friends while gaming. We’ve started out with a 50 slot server. If and as it fills up, we will increase it accordingly to allow room for players to have a place to chat while gaming.

This is the first server launched as part of a test run for Lagwar.com’s “Pickup Group” campaign (more info to come), so be mature and respectful of other players and enjoy the free server. We ask that you join a room that is vacant unless you are joining a room someone you know has already claimed for you both to use.

As part of this ongoing process we will be seeking moderators to help out with all of our public servers. Currently, we are seeking moderators for our public Ventrilo server. If you would like to help out and become a volunteer Lagwar.com Moderator please send an email to Show@Lagwar.com. Please include a little bit about yourself (age, games you play, gaming hours per week, etc.) and we will most certainly get in touch with you. Running a public server can be a disaster, but with the help of a solid community it can be a huge success.

Also, we ask that everyone who uses our public servers to report any issues, technical or personal, to Show@Lagwar.com. Even if you have nothing negative to report, your feedback is greatly appreciated!

We will be posting up surveys soon asking what games you would like to see Lagwar.com host public servers for. So stop back by and tune in to the podcast. Email any questions, comments, or suggestions you may have on our public server initiative to Show@Lagwar.com.

In the future you can find our public server news and info by visiting the Public Server page. A link is now available on the menu bar at our home page.

Enjoy the free stuff and have fun gaming!

Thank you for your continued support!

Lagwar was founded in the Spring of 2008 by a group of gamers from Tactical Gamer, Team Warfare League (TWL League), and the World Series of Video Games. Earlier iterations of the site were launched in 2007 under a different name. The site eventually underwent a full takeover by it’s current management lineup in Fall of 2008. As a pre-survey survey, what’s some games you would like to see us host a server for? Left 4 Dead maybe? Call of Duty: W@W? Anything at all?

    Thanks!

L4D, CoD4/CoD5, TF2, Demigod (When we start buying it xD), Etc etc.

Of course, when my guild is doing something that requires vent, (Such as a zone push in WAR) I won’t be able to chat with you all, but I’m sure you’ve already thought of that.

Also, do you guys have any info on Aion? It looks sort of cool, but I’d like to hear some more opinions about it first.

I did a short write up on it in my MMO compendium.. i think? Hard to say too much till we can get our hands on a beta, it could just be a very pretty version of WoW. Which isnt a bad thing, its just a thing. Have to wait and see.

@ servers for games – Public servers are hard. I think skewing the games we slot for to small group games, i.e. Demigod, or TF2 would be best.

I’ve found in WAR that you need at least a 24 person capability for your average raid night. If you have a group queueing for scenarios they will need a channel to drop down to for the duration of the scenario, then back up.

and thats if you only have 1 warband, once you get multiple warbands coordinating you need a bunch more slots, also considering that the raid leaders need to ghost in each wb channel.

A Lagwar wide call might fall short, the best way to do it might be to aim at specific PvP groups since PvP tends to be smaller (excepting oRvR of course). i.e. Iron Rock Server Scenario High Elf/Dark Elf Scenario Channel. We could get smack talk between the realms, it wouldnt be an ideal use by any means, seeing as how WAR is situated to deter inter realm fighting outside of the game, but its hopefully a starting point to focus the use of the vent for other games.

its for anyone for any purpose at all. it’s not specifically for WAR or any game at all. it will take a while for it to catch on (if it does at all) but it’s there if anyone wants to use it. anyone who doesn’t have a vent server but is say doin a pug in WoW or COD or anything. But even in WAR, most warbands are not pre-made. They are just random people joining, and itd be hard for me to believe that the entire warband is on vent. much less multiple warbands in the same zone using the same vent. but i do see what you’re saying no doubt, just gotta keep in mind this is for anyone to use at anytime. not just WAR or MMO players. could be two people that just want to chat. haha doesn’t matter to me : ) but even if someone starting up a guild doesnt want to get their own vent but wants to use this one, then i will increase the slot size to 100. just have to wait and see if it’s even used at all. thats still yet to be seen. but we’re def. not the first to host a pub server, there are tons of them. and a lot of them from sites that are much larger than us.

it’s there so hopefully people will use it. if not, we’ll take it down. nothing lost : )

gotta remember this is a test. id hate to spend hundreds of dollars getting 200 slot servers and 20 game servers only to have zero people in them. would be a waste of money. so just trying to see if people would actually use these kinds of things if we did them before we jump head first into an empty swimming pool : P

Thanks for the comments, we need all the feedback we can get on this!

btw sarc, the scenario channels for WAR would be neat if people would use it. i can increase the server capacity at any time so if you wanna give it a test go lemme know and we’ll increase the size and promote it on the forums. (cringes at the thought of trolls)
