During the Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas Dino Dai Zovi, a Mac researcher, disclosed the information regarding the Mac’s Software flaw.
According to Dino the Mac’s operating system, X kernel, could be more easily hacked due to the fact that it has a lot more code than windows, leaving more room for vulnerabilities and bugs that hackers could exploit. In fact hackers have already begun to attack Macs, earlier this year hackers begun attacking a small amount of Macs via pirated software.
A technique that has been dubbed as “Machiavelli”, exploits the vulnerability in the X kernel. It only works on machines that have already been victimized, such as the ones attacked by the pirated software. However, once the process has started “It can take control of Apple’s Safari browser, logging passwords to financial accounts and data on bank statements” – Dai Zovi.
With such a big security flaw, why haven’t Macs,in the past, been the target of large viral threats? The answer is quite simple, due to the low population of Mac users most hackers find it insignificant compared to everyone else in the world who uses a PC. Why create something that will only attack one million people when you can create the same thing to attack five billion people?
So I guess Macs really are just a fad, and that Microsoft always gets the last laugh.
“There is no magic fairy dust protecting Macs” – Dino Dai Zovi
