Fallen Earth: Looking to Patch 1.1.0

Fallen Earth, the post-apocalyptic MMO smash-hit, has officially been out for less than a month but players are always looking ahead and wondering what’s to come in the first big patch. Will we see new missions, new items, or even some fancy new social tools? Or will the creators of a game that has given all of us wasteland fever go for continued performance enhancements, polished textures, and a list of bug-fixes as long as a spotted cat from the Northfields tail?

Recently, the development team released a State of the Game post that touched on several hot-topics within the community. Personally, my hats off to the dev team for such a great post. They did a great job of making the players feel warm and welcome while maintaining an extremely humble approach.

Now, let me quote the third paragraph from the write-up:

Following patch 1.1.0, we will work to resolve issues related to accessing promotional items cross-character on user accounts in addition to a few quick bug fixes. We’re also working on more content in the levels 32–35. You’ll also see upgrades to the updater, significantly cutting down on the “Collating Data” phase and helping with some of our European download rates.”

Notice the first three words are: following patch 1.1.0. They have already resolved the issue of accessing promotional items across your entire account, so you can mark that one off the list. That leaves such things as a few bug fixes, more content in levels 32-35, with various other updates to the updater to crack down on that nasty collating data phase.

But again, all of the above were said to be implemented after patch 1.1.0. Well, what’s coming in 1.1.0? Nothing official had been announced at the time of writing this post but MMORPG.com reported that Fallen Earth would be releasing patch 1.2.0 into the game on October 22nd, 2009. Surely this is a typo, right?

The first paragraph of the article was posted as follows:

“On October 22nd the Fallen Earth development team will roll out a major patch, featuring new player experience areas. These new areas are an optional extension to the existing tutorial. Also included in the patch are upgrades for town events and eight pages of bug fixes, confirming that this team doesn’t sleep.”

I’m guessing it is a typo, today is October 16th and I really don’t see 1.1.0 coming over the weekend only to release patch 1.2.0 less than a week from now. So I suppose someone made an error and we should take these notes to be the notes for Fallen Earth patch 1.1.0.

Tutorial enhancements we can expect to see in patch 1.1.0 include up to an extra 45 minutes of game play with the tutorials current player level of 40 although the extension and tutorial is completely optional. Colin Dwan, project manager for Fallen Earth stated that while they do not want to remove the challenge of the game, they do want to make some of the early game choices more understandable for new players. The new tutorial content is being implemented to provide players a better understanding of mounts, scavenging, and the whale of a crafting system while allowing players to learn the combat system and harvesting of tradeskill components.

In game town events will also see some much needed love. Boneclaw, Clinton Farm and the Embry Crossroads Monster Hunt were given a second look by the development team to help players better understand that the events are available to participate in and also how they work. Town events are a great idea and really needed a second run-over by the devs in my opinion. A functionality improved and intuitive town event in Fallen Earth could bring players together in teams more often where currently it seems the majority of content is done solo.

Eight pages of bug fixes is a lot, even for a team that is notorious for releasing patch notes and bug fixes several pages in length. I’m really anxious to see what those fixes are and how many of them will affect me personally in game. The team really seems focused on optimizing the engine, polishing graphics, and fixing various bugs as we’ve seen from the last several patches. This is what I like to see from a new MMORPG. Too many developers out there worry about dumping out new content before their game is even playable.

The patch notes are reported to be officially released on October 21st where you can find them by visiting the official Fallen Earth forums. Patch 1.1.0 is expected to release one day later on October 22nd.
