I don’t care for the Champions store. I am an old school AD&D player — 1970s style. We earned our loot. We earned our perks. We worked for it. Now the general argument seems to be that the C-Store’s RMT (real monetary transaction) system makes no change to the game equilibrium. I come from a world where you earn your goodies. Buying certain items in no way directly impacts the game’s mechanical balance, but it does offer aesthetic or other benefit to those that put down the real green to procure some virtual currency.
To get to the C-Store, go to C on the mini map and click on C Store or type /cstore into the command line. Here is what’s on offer:
Costume Enhancements: Make yourself look pretty
Character Enhancements: Add slots, get a retcon, or rename your character
Collectible Action Figures: Vanity pets follow you about the game
Costumes
The complete Halloween Costume Set (C640): Skeleton Set: C240, Web Set: C240 , Head Set: 240
Cyborg Beast, Epic Samurai – C240 each:
Three emblem packs @ C80 each: Si-FI, Weapons, and Bestial. You can place these on costume parts that allow for an emblem such as a chest or helm.
Character Enhancements: Add slots, get a retcon, or rename your character
The name change and the slots remain largely insignificant, but a RESPEC (aka RETCON in Cryptic / Comic Book Speak for retroactive continuity) allows you to play and configure your character in ways that less economically endowed players can not. If I have the worldly cash and the desire, I can reconfigure my character and ultimately, through trial and error, arrive at the optimal spec without any in-game labor. Personally, this can work in my favor, but not everyone will be able to benefit.
Collectible Action Figures: Vanity pets follow you about the game
I count 13 action figures you can buy for C80 each. There are also Nemesis related action figures, but this requires you to get points through nemesis missions and combat.
These companies exist to earn profit, so I don’t begrudge them that aspect of the proposition. If the market bears it out and they create a service that people consume, then more power to them. I don’t foresee myself purchasing anything through the /cstore anytime soon. Somehow, it just feels wrong.
