Tuesday marks the start of the new raid week and the release of Starcraft 2. Good luck filling those raids guild leaders, the lack of new content until Cataclysm and Starcraft 2 are going to take a double-whammy on your raid attendance. Be prepared for no-shows as previously iron clad tanks drop their swords for the chance to control siege tanks, as rogues vanish from your guild roster to appear as ghosts targeting nuclear strikes, and as your most dependable players switch their mastery of guild mechanics for a mastery of micro-mechanics.

A few weeks ago Blizzard came up with an interesting idea. They wanted to extend their RealID system that they use as a social tool in Blizzard games into Blizzard forums. They had the paradigm altering notion that when you post your thoughts and ideas online that they should be associated with your actual name. You don’t have to be an internet archaeologist to know that this is significant change from our normal my “avatar’s avatar’s avatar posted a comment on the forums today” system. Some people liked the idea, lots of people hated the idea, and even more were generally uncomfortable with RealID in the forums. The new wave of accountability for your account will never materialize as Blizzard panned the idea after vocal outcries against it. But what really was the Real problem with RealID?

I was looking around on the internet yesterday, as I am prone to do, and I noticed that the second wave of Cataclysm beta invites were being released soon. My heart instantly skipped a beat and I nearly fell out of my chair as I exclaimed “OOOOH!”. (OK – that isn’t entirely true, my heart skipped a beat for sure but the chair thing was probably more a fault of the missing wheel on one leg that randomly plunges me out of my seat and not so much the force of the exclamation) I want a beta invite so badly. A few days ago I gingerly sat down on my chair and compiled a list of reasons why I am so worthy of the honor of playing Cataclysm before the other peasants. It is long. It is divided into sections. It has doodles of myself playing Cataclysm (although in the doodles my chair is represented as being far sturdier than it actually is) along the margins. It is also not the topic of this article, the topic of this article is the amazing email I found in my inbox this very night.

Sometimes the worst surprises in life, and WoW, are the unexpected ones. We aren’t talking about surprise birthday parties or surprise – “there is a $20 bill in my pocket” – I mean bad surprises, like I was walking down the street and SURPRISE – gunshot wound. Those type of surprises. So I was surprised and disappointed last night when we scrounged up a Ruby Sanctum 10 man raid and ran into some serious difficulties. It was a lot like a surprise gunshot wound except with more purple colored dragons and lethal laser orbs.

In real life – the part that I don’t spend in front of my computer – I run a softball team. For those of you unfamiliar with softball it’s baseball with 10 players (rather than 9) and a larger, questionably softer ball. For those of you unfamiliar with outdoor activities in general, it’s a group sport with 10 players on a team – that will suffice for today. Managing a softball team comes with lots of responsibilities. I need to schedule games, acquire fields for said games, and acquire beer for said games. All these activities cause me little to no stress. The hardest part of managing the softball team is getting 10 players that are actually going to show up for the game. In fake life – the part that I spend in front of my computer – I run a WoW guild. The hardest part of managing a guild is getting 10 players that are actually going to show up for a raid.

Have you ever wondered what happens to the Olympic villages after the Olympics leave town? After only a month of use all those glitzy venues shut down – many for good, and are quickly forgotten. The Athens 2004 Olympic village was considered to be in disrepair by 2008. The idyllic Beijing facilities are going the same way. These “ruins” around the world serve as a memory of something that was all too brief. You may be wondering how this Olympic mumbo-jumbo has anything to do with WoW. Well, after six years of gameplay WoW has its own relics of half implemented oft forgotten ideas strewn around the world as well.

Don’t call it a comeback it never left – we just forgot it was there. Recently among a ravenous population of badge hunting PUGGers a new type of raider has emerged, or perhaps more accurately – reemerged: the Classic Raider. These players level characters up to 60, pay to halt their experience gain, and raid the old classic WoW instances. LIke the Amish, these new-age classic raiders know that newer content is out there, it’s just not for them. They prefer their raids large, their bosses even bigger, and feel that purples should be earned by hours of playtime – not a few instance runs. Are they crazy? Or do they have a point? What would make you ignore the last 4 years of WoW progress and jump back into Molten Core?

Next patch AVR will meet its maker. At least Blizzard hopes so. This past week the devs announced that they would actively try to break the mod AVR with the next patch. Augmented virtual reality (or AVR or John Madden invaded your copy of WoW) is a mod that allows users to draw shapes and figures on their screen and share that information with other raiders. Need to show people where to stand during phase 1? Let’s draw a big red circle. Need to show where to drop ice tombs during the Sindragosa encounter? Let’s throw down some X’s. Need to draw genitalia over the screen for the whole raid? It can do that too. It can do so much in fact that Blizzard decided it breaks game mechanics and now are trying to break it. But AVR isn’t the only offender; there are many other mods that seek to turn the tides of encounters in the favor of the raider. Are these mods next? And should Blizzard ever have given us the power to implement mods in the first place?

Everquest II, Warhammer Online, Age of Conan, Aion: what do all these MMO’s have in common? They were all billed as potential WoW killers. Whether it was by their overzealous fanbase or by the developers themselves, these games all put WoW squarely in their cross hairs, pulled the trigger, and horribly missed. None of these games was able to dethrone WoW, most of them didn’t even register as a blip on the radar of the subscription juggernaut. Don’t get me wrong, these are not bad games, quite the contrary, they represent some of the best MMO’s to take a shot at WoW since 2004. The question remains, if these worthy contenders couldn’t last a few rounds in the ring with WoW, who can?

We finally did it. The 10-man guild I play with downed the Lich King last week and in epic style. It took about 6 hours of work but finally all the random hiccups we had experienced in our numerous attempts took a smoke break and we grabbed our Kingslayer titles. After 6 hours over 2 nights of attempts, numerous strategy changes, tweaks, tweaks of tweaks, and complete strategic overhauls, we had finally accomplished our goal. Later that night I told guild-members that I thought that the Lich King encounter was “one of the best” raid bosses Blizzard had ever crafted for its players, after a few nights of reflection I take that statement back – the Lich King encounter is the best encounter Blizzard has given its players.

Hear the music in the air? That is the death knell of the World of Warcraft – or at least that’s what many players have said this week. These players started ordering up last rites for the game after a single developer post that announced that 10-man and 25-man raids would share a raid timer and drop the same loot in Cataclysm. The sorry prognosticators of WoW’s fate argue that the changes will cause the death of 25-man raiding and with it the death of the game itself. I am loathe to admit it, but these players are right…or at least half so.

Let me share a story with you. The setting is a 5 man instance; our main characters include a tank, a healer, and three DPSers, one of which happens to be a warlock. The group is progressing through the instance relatively well, but after the first boss fight the tank notices that it’s taking a little longer to clear trash than expected. He takes a quick glance at his DPS meters and sees that the warlock in the group is lagging behind. He inspects the lock’s gear and sees some improper itemization and shockingly notices that the lock is sporting some unspent talent points. He alerts the group, harsh words are uttered, a kick-vote is initiated and the warlock is booted. Not too unusual right? The lock should know better by now – L2P or whatever. What’s not usual about this story is the setting wasn’t Pit of Saron, or ToC, or even the Nexus, this story took place in the Deadmines. As it turns out our poor protagonist, the warlock, never had a chance. She was a new player (actually new, like this was her main) in a 5 man group with 4 heirloomed-out ICC raiders on alts. In a game where Blizzard is shooting characters to max level with blistering speed, how are players supposed to learn to play in groups? Or even in raids?

In a week where an estimated 400K plus players have opened their pocketbooks to add a celestial steed to their stable, my wallet is staying firmly shut. My level 80 characters will have to suck it up and manage with their less-than-celestial steeds. They will just have to suffer through the pain and embarrassment of riding non-translucent mounts. Why handicap my characters’ coolness by leaving them with their less aesthetically pleasing “standard mounts”? Because I a little afraid of where this micro(macro)transaction trend could take us. What’s to fear from a translucent horse? I doubt it could bite – in fact I am not even sure it has teeth. Teeth or no, the horse can set a precedent, one that I am not happy about.

A few weeks ago when Blizzard announced changes to dispel mechanics I figured that would be the last little gasp of Cataclysm information we got before the alpha started and proverbial lips were zipped. Well, it seems that I was wrong, as last week Blizzard released tentative class change previews (for all classes save paladins). How does this affect your class? And how does it affect you? We threw around ideas of moving some tanks to DPS and healers to tanks and even some healers to DPS. This is the magic of having dual specs. One idea that was thrown around briefly was a plan to move my resto druid from raid healing to DPS as a moonkin. I was immediately appalled that the notion. Had not I suffered enough? I already had to raid as a creepy looking tree, unable to show my glorious looking gear to the raid, but now I had to be a fat owl?

Last weekend was the debut of the Penny Arcade Expo or PAX, on the east coast. It was also the first non-Blizzcon gaming convention I have had the chance to attend. I had the fortune of having Lagwar pay my way in, being able to stay with some friends near the convention center, and living close enough to Boston that I could take a bus – so the whole event was pretty cheap and easy for me. Not everyone is that lucky, but don’t worry for those of you who couldn’t make the event I have summarized PAX East 2010 in 50 points, it’ll be like you were there – except you weren’t.

You didn’t have to have a warrior tanking, druids could do it too, you didn’t have to have a priest for healing, shaman, paladins, and druids could step in as well. Blizzard has come a long way with the idea that a raid should be comprised of the best players, not necessarily just the best class composition, but there is still some work to do.

We probably won’t get too much more information until right before Cataclysm hits (Blizzard is normally pretty hush-hush about these sorts of things). That means that we have one(ish) more real content patch before we enter the edge of the expansion dead zone.
I actually have a pretty busy schedule, so on days that I am not raiding, I have but one (WoW-related) goal – to do my daily random heroic dungeon for my two frost badges. As a resto druid with good gear this is a pretty straightforward process. I enter the dungeon queue, wait about 2 minutes, and then press my rejuvenate button a bunch of times and collect my two frost badges. It’s a pretty nice routine. So I was surprised a few days ago when I got pulled into a Halls of Stone and pulled aggro – a lot. But I wasn’t the only one; the DPS couldn’t do anything without having mobs come over to hug them either. The instance was suddenly taking far longer than I wanted, and on top of that, people were getting one and two-shotted by mobs that shouldn’t have been anywhere near them. Our tank was bad, really bad. While most tanks have no trouble holding aggro anymore (thanks to Blizzard) you might have noticed that tanks just don’t seem to be built quite like they used to.

How hard is too hard? This is not a question normally associated with WoW. In fact many players (especially those playing other MMO’s) have critiqued WoW as being too easy. But the fact remains – Arthas, the final raid boss of Icecrown Citadel, the pinnacle of WOTLK raiding, has been active for over a month and only two guilds have killed him on heroic difficulty –and both kills were in 10 man format. If most the best guilds in the game can’t kill Arthas after a month is he too hard?
