The random fairy came…

Posted by Slurm On January - 4 - 2009

…and gave me my first gold bag!

From the magical golden Santa bag I pulled my first piece of the Devastator set. Getting it kind of re-ignited some desire to get my character leveled up.

To be honest with you, I haven’t really been putting too much time into WAR lately. It’s probably because of the holidays and the bevy of new games I now have to play, but it may also be because the Warrior Priest went through a serious grind to 20; afterward, … well, he needed some time on the sofa with a Sigmarite Brand Baked Cheddar chips and +20 Reality Show Resist remote control.  He is now 23, and a lot of the past level has been primarily RvR in order to keep on my break from quest/PQ grinding. I’ve been using a steady mix of both open RvR and Scenario RvR. Most of the exp came from scenarios, and most of the fun came from open RvR, which is just wrong. Which brings up something that’s been itching away at my brain for the past couple weeks namely the promise we were made by Mark Jacobs on the 25th of November:

” Finally, I want to close this out with a brief explanation about the role that we believe that oRvR should play in WAR. It’s really as simple as this, oRvR should be a major focus for leveling, item gain, etc. in WAR. Some of the systems are already in place and in Tier 4, oRvR is alive and well. On other Tiers, however, oRvR is not being engaged in as often as we had hoped when we launched WAR. Our goal is to ensure that oRvR is the place where players can level the fastest, get the best items and overall, have a great time while doing it. It is supposed to be riskier, more challenging but ultimately, more rewarding than any other place within WAR. What is outlined in this letter are some of the ways we plan on making this happen over the next few months and beyond. “

You can read the entire post here.

I guess I’d like to know that Mythic is at least working on the exp issue in open RvR. Maybe they are trying to fix the hitching/lag/performance issues before they unleash rewards that would send tons of players to do battle in the same zone. All I know is, currently, it’s very hard to get any worthwhile experience in open RvR. Renown points, yes. But I’d like to see that XP bar move when I kill something. I’ve already made my suggestions for open RvR. I just hope Mythic has something in mind to make the system worth using.

WAR Performance Benchmark - Part One

Posted by Ziss On January - 2 - 2009

Welcome to part one of our Warhammer Online benchmark series. Throughout this series we will be testing various hardware and software to give you a general idea of what type of experience you can expect to have while using the items tested or the like.

Performance benchmarks are very tough to do with MMO’s and probably shouldn’t be used to evaluate the highest level of performance hardware can achieve in offline games. There are many varying factors outside of your PC’s hardware involved in an MMO that are not included in offline games. These include but are not limited to; your ISP and the bandwidth your service provides, how many players are currently logged into the game, whether the world your logged into is a persistent or non-persistent world, the size of the world, the graphics engine the game was built on, or even what players around you are doing in-game. When you think about everything involved in making an MMO work, the number of factors and the amount of data is almost ridiculous. So keep in mind that the benchmarks we will show you do not necessarily mean you will get the same performance by using the hardware we used. It should give you a good idea of the type of performance you can achieve as well as a few tweaks or upgrades you can try out to better your in-game experience.

Egghead, Likes His Booky Book…

Posted by Slurm On December - 27 - 2008

This will be a rarity, its a book review! Now, I know what youre thinking, “Slurm! this is a video game site, we care not for your books!” And to be honest with you, Im not much of a reader. I cant seem to focus enough on a book to get through it. Maybe I have attention deficit diso-OOH CAKE!

mmmm cake…where was I…oh yes the book review.

Yes, I realize this is a game site, but when I started playing Warhammer Online, I realized that I didnt know much about the history and lore behind the game. I rarely get so enamored with a game that I care what the lore is. The only exception was Dark Age of Camelot, where I was soo curious about the real life connections with the Midgard realm, that I picked up a few books on Norse Mythology.

I’ve played most Warhammer video games, but never read any of the lore, or played the tabletop. So my viewpoint has always been from what the games had shown me. The game Mark of Chaos really made me want to play on the Destruction side, which is what I originally rolled on until the guild Im in thought it was a better idea to move to the Order side for more RvR action. They were right initially, but I always felt a little out of place. Like I didnt know what the “Good Guys” were all about. I had the basics. The dwarves were your typical “Im in your mountain, mining your ore and making the armorz” beardy creatures, much like the Tolkein Dwarves. The  High Elves were the “gotta do a double-take to see if im a man or a woman, but ill slice you up with my whirling dirvish sword moves while you figure it out” race,…also much like the Tolkein creations. Roll Out the Barrel…

Posted by Slurm On December - 26 - 2008

…no, wait…roll it back, its not ready yet.

I posted a “first review” of the Keg’s End live event on my guild site, you can read it here if you like.  You can even read others thoughts on the event here or here.  All mostly point towards the same conclusion: Too grindy.

I really thought with what we saw from the Heavy Metal event that Mythic was heading in the right direction with the live events. Most MMO players like fluff right? If not, WoW wouldn’t be at 11.5 million subscribers. But I thought Mythic was going to do WAR different. The team that brought us a game with crafting that was intended to be the equivalent to stamp collecting (interesting to some, but boring for most and will make very few any money). I thought they would leave most of the fluff out of the live events, or make the shiny things so easy to get that anyone could get on one night, get the tasks done, and go back to bustin’ heads in open RvR.

We saw with Witching Night that Mythic seemed to be putting the feelers out. Testing the live event waters if you will. Witching night had the standard WoW type fluff, but it also had rare world drops, and an elite reward that wasn’t worth getting (which is okay because it would take forever to get to). But, as most did, I forgave any indiscretions because it was the first live event, and VERY close after the games initial release. Read the rest of this entry »

A Feast of Feasts

Posted by Wrewdinge On December - 23 - 2008

The Goblins of Smokeywood pastures have been working hard in order to spread the holiday cheer of The Feast of Wintersveil across the land. Whether its in the alternate dimension Outlands or far up north in the frozen tundra of Northrend. The spirit of Wintersveil is not hard to find.

All of the heroes have banned together with the Goblins to help insure that Wintersveil Day shall be a success. Some were sent off to the Searing Gorge in order to help find the lost Reindeer Metzen, others cooking abilities were put to the test as they prepared food for Great Father Winter’s début. Last but not least, a group was sent up north to the mountains near South Shore to take down the Abominable snow man and retrieve the treats for Wintersveil Day.

Commoners everywhere are dressed for this glorious occasion and towns are coated from head to toe with “Christmas” spirit. Lights are strung from window shops, trees sprouted everywhere overnight, stockings hanging from railings, and there’s even a throne chair for Great Father Winter himself in certain cities.

Not just townsfolk and heroes are getting into the Wintersveil spirit. Some of the bosses within the instances seem to have a supply of Wintersveil clothing that you may stumble upon while going through their person after defeating them. Though they may have just snatched them off of a poor soul wandering through their domain.

I would just like to remind everyone to go to the trees in either Orgrimmar or Ironforge on Wintersveil day, December 25th, to receive their presents. Otherwise both of the cities will reek of rotten food when the event is over due to the food products packaged inside some of the presents going bad.

Happy Holidays,

Wrewdinge

A day without Internet… Oh mi.

Posted by Wrewdinge On December - 23 - 2008

Yes it happened. Painters came over to my house and had to unplug my router in order to paint a room, so that meant no Internet for me.

Seeing as theres barely anything good on T.V. anymore and the fact that my DVD player decided it would roll over and die. I began browsing through my drawer filled with my old computer games and of course I stumbled upon one of the best games I have ever played.

It was Oblivion.

For some reason Oblivion is one of the only games that I go back to time and time again after my MMO phase started. All my other FPS games are collecting dust, as well as my systems. Just the level of different things that I can do in a short amount of time in Oblivion is what makes it fun, to me.

I decided to make a new character and to try out something new that I havent done before. Usually I have blades, light armor, and block then what I wanted. This time however I wanted to give myself a slight challenge.

I created a Wood Elf, as usual, and picked thieving attributes as usual (Sneak, Security, and Acrobatics). The only difference with my regimen this time was the fact that instead of picking up weapon and armor skills I picked up mercantile and speech craft, and then just grabbed Marksmanship and restoration.

I decided it would be a challenge not to have any melee weapons in the game.

Right off the bat out of the sewers I swam across the river towards the small dungeon across the way, instead of my usual going to Imperial city and killing someone to get into the thieves and assassins guild. I snuck around the outside of the dungeon first, spotting one of the two bandits who patrolled outside, first shot take down, gently turned around the corner spotted the second one, took him down also in one shot. Took the ones arrows then proceeded inside.

The rest of the dungeon involved me cleverly sneaking around and making marvelous shots with my bow. The only monster that would not be taken down with my bow on first shot was the two zombies I ran across, those took about 10 to take down.

I realized that the blue glowing stones that are supported by bases on top of the pillars of stones that are out of reach could be shot down by bows. So by the time I was done with the dungeon I had accumulated about 25 stones, a statue, and then the artifact. So I “teleported” to the Imperial city and sold all of those on top of what I got out of the sewers and made a quick 2k coins.

Ill possibly be checking in on Oblivion more often than usual now. But of course it might be awhile until I go back, Christmas is less than a week away.

The Slurm Factory…

Posted by Slurm On December - 23 - 2008

Hello all,

Slurm here, bringing you news, reviews and general nonsense from the world of Warhammer Online. Ill be giving you my opinions on things going on in WAR, as well as interesting stuff that I come across in game and in the WAR community.

To tell you a bit about myself, Im a 28 year old married man (sorry imaginary ladies), father of 2, and gamer for life. Id tell you about my career, life goals and such, but thats not very interesting, and surely not why you came to this site. Ive been playing games since I as far back as I can remember, I even have a photo of myself as a young lad on Xmas day cracking open a copy of The Empire Strikes Back for the Atari 2600.  Since then, Ive owned (and still own) most gaming systems ever made. But as the years progressed I found my calling to be PC gaming. I still dabble in the consoles, but between shooters and MMOs, I cant seem to get away from the PC scene. Speaking of MMOs, I have been playing them since Everquest, and have tried most since. I came to Warhammer Online from World of Warcraft, but ever since I left Dark Age of Camelot, I could never fully immerse myself in WoW. I was basically playing it because there was nothing else better at the time. Im glad WAR came along and finally snatched me from the grasp of WoW. OH, how Ive missed RVR.

In Warhammer Online, I play on the Volkmar server on the order side. I have 4 characters over rank 20, but the one I believe Ill be sticking with is my Warrior Priest, Deepfatfriar. So, if you are on Volkmar on the Order side, feel free to say hey. If you are on Volkmar on the destruction side, prepare to die. Especially YOU, Misfit of the WARP guildie.

Anyways, I hope you enjoy my future segments on the site, happy hunting!

An Oil Bailout?

Posted by Brilen On December - 15 - 2008

I am so happy Open-RvR isn’t hard to find anymore. I love being able to log on at any point and find a keep somewhere under attack. This past weekend, I spent all of my WAR playing time in Open-RvR. I have just one complaint (well, one so far): Why are players allowed to heal the oil? I do not understand what sense this makes whatsoever. If I am attacking the oil, it should not be able to be “healed” or repaired. This is the most frustrating thing I have found in open RvR. It’s almost as if the oil has a bailout system. (The oil is going to crash! Quick, heal it!) I think when the oil is being attacked, it should be vulnerable to damage. Once the oil “dies,” another one should be able to be built in it’s place in the amount of time it takes to put up oil. This way, the opposing team will have a chance to feel like something is being done to prevent damage to their warband. For the defending team, this will make the sense of attack and threat more urgent, instead of a healer having the specific job to keep the oil from going down.

Another concern I have with the oil is in patch 1.1, targeting was supposed to be fixed for attackers. This would finally allow you to target and attack the oil with ranged attacks properly. There stills seems to be issues with this. I haven’t tried all of the tier 3 keeps yet, but most of what I have tried targeting is still an issue. Just my thoughts on the hot, burning, painful oil.
