Crysis Warhead Windows 7 and XP performance comparison

Posted by Brad West On July - 30 - 2009

As I previously mentioned, I’ve been very impressed with the Windows 7 Release Candidate v.7200 and I was curious to see what the performance differences, if any, would be while playing various PC games versus Windows XP. Most will probably agree that Windows XP turned out to be an extremely solid operating system, especially [...]

Battlefield Heroes Review

Posted by Louis Valentino On July - 29 - 2009

Battlefield Heroes is a new third-person shooter developed by DICE. It’s a free download supported by a micro-transaction system. The goal of these “free-to-play” games is to attract you with a free game and then allow you to purchase avatar items and upgrades for your character. Battlefunds is the currency used to ‘rent’ weapons and avatar items for a limited amount of time. You can buy these Battlefunds through PayPal and most credit cards are supported as well.

You start off by creating and customizing a persistent character that you will use through the matches you play. The character’s experience, abilities, and appearance carry through as you level up. You choose one of two typical WWII allies/axis factions, customize his appearance, and join a game. The leveling system in Battlefield Heroes allows players to unlock upgrades and abilities as you progress. You gain XP for capturing flags, dealing damage, healing/repairing, and of course killing enemy players. You don’t necessarily need to get tons of kills to level up as long as you support your team. Completing missions, such as killing a certain number of people with a particular weapon in a match, earns you Valor Points. Valor Points are used to buy weapons and avatar items that expire after a week or a month (similar to Battlefunds), however these become difficult to get and are limited. There are also Hero Points which are gained every other level and are used to unlock minor abilities to add to your gear slot before games.

DICE’s Battlefield 1943, which was released earlier this month on both Xbox [...]

War Newbie Guide: RvR

Posted by Sarc On July - 26 - 2009

At this point in the game you’re probably wondering why you would want to control the zone. I mean, with scenarios queue-able from anywhere and quests galore, who has time to jump into the RvR lake?!? Well, first Tier 1 open RvR is very exciting and as you get higher in level you will HUGELY crush lower level opposition since you have more skills at your disposal than they will. It’s Honest to Sigmar fun since if you capture the pairing you receive a big fat chunk of experience and renown!

So here’s the deal, there are 4 battlefield objectives around the zone, pop open the map and look for Flag symbols, they will have a timer next to them which is counting down, we’ll worry about that later. At each of these flags there are NPC guards that you will have to defeat in order to claim the BFO, in Tier 1 they aren’t terribly tough so you can solo or duo the NPCs with smart pulls, dependent on your career of course. Once you take the BFO by right clicking on it after all the guards are dead, you have to maintain control for 3 minutes. Pro Tip: During this time the opposite realm will have been alerted to your activity and will likely be running their tier 1 booties over to your location so if there is any advantageous terrain now is the time to get on, in or behind it. (i.e. Ranged DPS should try to get elevated, MDPS should hide behind a building or a rock so that they can surprise anybody coming in and Support should hide behind something obscure so you can pop in and out of Line of Sight to heal your friends and cast spells on your enemies)

DDR2 Memory Recommendations

Posted by Brad West On July - 25 - 2009

Memory is a fundamental part of any PC gaming machine. The type and amount of memory installed in your machine can make or break your gaming experience. I’ve wanted to post some memory recommendations for a while but was torn between including multiple types of memory in single article or keeping DDR2 and DDR3 separate. As you can probably tell by the name I’ve decided to do a separate write-up for each.

In this article I will give you some personal recommendations for DDR2 memory. Having tried out each of these I can tell you that the manufacturers, prices, speeds, cosmetics, and perks will vary but all products listed here offer solid performance for their respective price. I will be listing two modules for each speed: a lower end chip and a higher end chip. The lower end chips will offer solid performance and will be perfect for most users. The higher end modules are typically built specifically for PC gaming and cater to overclockers and users seeking to get the highest possible performance. Even though I am listing some higher end chips, I am attempting to stay away from the top-of-the-line items as I am writing this from a mid-range budget perspective. These will be parts that will offer the user good performance at a price that won’t break the bank.
